Cat Body Language-Do U Understand Them?
Well cat cant speak/utter using words like human like when we angry we shout "dammit!". Instead cat will voice "grrrrrr!" (is it? i'm not sure how to spell it..lol~)
So u may understand them by understanding their body language..like using their tail:
Besides looking at theit tail, u might wanna know:
Disgust or Irritation - Ears pulled back, tail swishing to from one side to another. Maybe even a low growl when he is being tormented.
Aggression - Hissing and growling. Hair on back raised and tail fluffed out. Arched back.
Contentedness - Kneading with the paws on a person or, for example, a favorite blanket or sleeping spot. Young kittens knead their mother's nipples to stimulate the feeding reflex in her so that her milk flows for the kittens to suckle on. Cats may knead for a short or extended period of time, the extended period is sometimes interpreted by people as a sign of discomfort or restlessness, but it is more likely the cat is happy. Most cats will demonstrate this for about ten minutes at the longest. During this time the cat may also purr, although that depends from one animal to the next. Ears are relaxed and facing forward, tail is quiet. Eyes barely open or closed completely.
Relaxation - Sleeping or resting in a vulnerable position, such as on his side on back, or with feet tucked under his chest.
Greeting - A particular sort of vocalization, such as a low meow or chirp, possibly with simultaneous purring. Often the cats will rub up against your legs, walk along with you and in between your feet. In approaching you, they can point their tails straight up at a 90 degree angle as a friendly gesture.
Affection - A pressing of the face or top of the head against a person's body, leaving a scent as a marking of territory. Some cats will cuddle on your lap or in the crook of your arms. Purring and kneading also commonly occur.
Submission - When faced with your anger, or another cat or animal it is submissive to, it will crouch down, ears back, and often raise hairs on its back. Eyes wide. This animal could fight and try and escape at any moment if required to.
Anger- Swishing of the tail. Ears pulled back. If faced with another cat or animal, hissing and possibly clawing with the front claws. If a fight ensues, cats will bite each other, vocalise loudly, kick at each other. Fur often flies all over.
Female behaviour - When in season, unspayed queens will vocalise to attract males. This is very irritating, and become quite loud. Although, some females never utter a peep, so that is not a definite. When she has been covered by a male, she will come home and roll around on her back for duration. She might also be more affectionate than usual.
When a queen has been impregnated, her nipples will start to enlarge, and the hair around them will fall out to allow ease of access to the kittens. When she is close to term, she will appear restless, and be poking her head into closets and spaces to find a birthing spot. She might even choose to have the kittens where their humans are, and might follow one around in order to do so.
Male behaviour - Males will explore their neighbourhoods, and each area has its alpha male. That would be the biggest whole male. He will protect all the females in his domain, and fight with any other males who wants to intrude. Male cats often have other male companions, often another male he has grown up with, or a brother. Males often go looking for females in season, and they often end up in harm's way. This is why it's better to have them neutered when they are six months old, to reduce this need.
Male cats spray urine on objects in their domain, as to mark their territory. Whole males urine smells much stronger than neutered males. Neutered males often don't spray at all. When a female in season is in his neighbourhood, he will seek her out by scent, and yowl and call to her at all hours, until such time he has secured her in mating, or she goes out of season.
What is the difference between cat fur and cat hair?
Yup! I was trying to find the answer for the above question..and i found dis useful article to share. Enjoy reading! I even provide a picture to try illustrate it better.. =) (of coz the model is 1 of my cat..)
Actually, all mammals have hair, from humans to whales, to pigs and elephants, to cats, dogs, and monkeys. But the hair has a different appearance, feel, and purpose, depending on the development of the individual species.
But Not All Hair is Fur
Technically speaking, however, the term fur is generally confined to mammals with very thick body hair. (Humans lost ours through evolution, if one believes Darwin.) With cats, the terms are almost always used interchangeably, although with some "hairless" breeds, the Sphynx in particular, the short, downy stuff that is almost invisible is usually called "hair."
But with most cats we use terms like "hairballs" to describe the fur cats swallow and then hack up, while we affectionately refer to our cats themselves as furballs or furkids.
Personally, I think of "cat hair" as individual and "cat fur" as collective, e.g., a cat hair is what I find on my black sweater. There may be many of them, but they are not all massed together like fur is on my cat. When grooming my cat I may either "comb his hair" or "brush his fur."
To complicate things further, breeders often describe the overall appearance of a cat's fur as its coat. You will see this term used almost exclusively in breed standards, but you will also see "hair" mentioned, as in longhair or shorthair breeds or divisions.
Different Types of Cat Hair and Coats
Like all hair, cat hair originates in the epidermis (under the skin), and the type of hair determines the structure. There is a muscle next to the root, just under the skin, that is extremely sensitive to temperature. In cold weather, or when a cat is frightened or alarmed this muscle contracts, causing the attendant hair to "stand straight up," causing that "Halloween cat" look that is so familiar. Cats may have from one to three types of hair in their coats, referenced sometimes as "double coat," or "triple coat," plus those distinctive whiskers, which are also hairs.
Whiskers (Vibrissae) @ misai kucing..hehe~
Long, thick, tactile hairs extending from the sides of the muzzle, above the eyes, the cheeks, and at the outside of the lower legs on cats. Whiskers are extremely sensitive, and play an important role in cats' ability to gauge openings, find their way around in total darkness, and they may even contain a scent-sensing ability. Whiskers are also an important factor in revealing cats' body language.
Guard Hairs
The longer, stiffer hairs that extend out past the "base coat" (awn hairs). These are the hairs that usually determine the basic color of the cat. Guard hairs help in retarding water to keep a cat dry.
Undercoat, also called "Down"
Softer, fluffier hair that provides warmth. This is the hair that tends to mat if a cat is not groomed regularly.
Awn Hairs
There are several different definitions of awn hairs, depending on the breed of cat, but awn hairs usually form the basic coat. In some breeds, the (finer) awn hairs may be the same length as the guard hairs, while in other breeds, such as the Manx, the guard hairs are longer.
Vellus
Sparse, baby-fine hairs, such as those found on the Sphynx cat. (Humans also have vellus on all but a few body parts.)
Curly Hair vs Straight Hair
As in humans, curly hair in cats has flattened shafts while straight hair has round shafts.
Cat Hair and Allergies
The allergen cats carry is a tiny protein particle called Feld1, which is found in cats' saliva. They transfer it to their hair when grooming, where it dries into microscopic flakes, commonly called dander. Very long or thick cat hair will hold more dander, which is where the misconception that the "hair" is the allergen arises. Dander can also be found all over the house: in the air, in bedding, and in carpets and drapes. The good news is that in many cases, allergies to cat dander can be controlled.
